Top Hits Finder is a free archive of the Billboard Hot 100, the United States’ definitive record of popular music. Our collection covers every weekly chart from the Hot 100’s debut on August 4, 1958 through December 1990 — more than 1,600 charts and over 160,000 individual entries spanning the birth of rock ’n’ roll, the British Invasion, Motown, disco and the MTV era.

Who runs Top Hits Finder
Top Hits Finder was created and is run by Michael Primm, who edits the archive, the stories and the Android app, and answers every message sent through the contact page. The site has no staff writers or sponsors; it is supported by advertising and by readers who share it.
How the archive is built
The archive holds one record per chart position per week: rank, song and artist for all 100 places on every weekly chart. Everything else on the site is computed from those records. A song's peak, its weeks on the chart, the length of a run at #1, the week's debuts and its biggest climbers and fallers are all worked out from the sequence of weekly lists rather than copied from anywhere. The same computed numbers feed the year and decade summaries, the record tables and the stories.
Editorial approach
The stories are written for readers who love this music and want the context behind the numbers: why a record stayed on top for nine weeks, how a dance craze sent a two-year-old single back to #1, what the Christmas chart says about its year. Every chart week mentioned in a story links to the full top 100 for that week, so you can check the claim yourself. Opinions in the stories are ours; the numbers are the chart's. If you believe a figure is wrong, tell us and we will check it against the source data.
